RosieQueen Latifah was born to Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. The second child of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most well-known for her political activism, acting abilities and a talent for rhyme. At the age of 8 old her Muslim friend named her Latifah, meaning "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah was a singer in the choir of the Shiloh Baptist church in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her debut public performance in which she sang "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a production of The Wizard of Oz. Latifah's mother was a catalyst. She was always in touch with students and the music. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was contacted by Latifah to perform at the dance. Mark the 45 King invited her to appear at the school dance.
